Belarus Free Theatre

Theatre in Exile

Context

Belarus Free Theatre is an award-winning company that has been working in exile for more than a decade, currently performing on a temporary stage in London. This project formed the practical part of my Master’s thesis Performing Protest, which explored and questioned the intersection of design and activism.

challenge

The challenge was to create a design system that channels the theatre’s grassroots radicalism while remaining systematic and replicable. The outcome is a visual language that is bold, symbolic, and adaptable—built to communicate dissent consistently across formats.

The concept, Urgent Print, translates the speed and immediacy of protest into a clear visual language. The logo, inspired by paper folds, is simple enough to be replicated beyond digital formats. Halftone type effects extend the system, referencing the rough, fast printing techniques of street activism.

The idea’s simplicity allows motion in the digital space, extending the identity beyond physical limits.
